L-carnitine is an organic chemical compound classified as a vitamin-like substance. It is a dipeptide consisting of amino acids such as methionine and lysine. This compound occurs naturally in the human body: intracorporeal production of L-carnitine takes place in the liver and kidneys, and the substance accumulates mainly in cardiac and skeletal muscle. L-carnitine can also be supplied to the body through food, and this food-derived compound is characterised by high bioavailability; it is considered to come from animal products: meat, fish, milk and dairy products. Dietary supplements containing this substance may be useful for athletes and people with an increased demand for L-carnitine.

L-carnitine comes in several different forms. OstroVit uses L-carnitine tartrate, a form that shows a faster absorption rate than other available forms of the compound, which may be especially valuable for physically active people.
