Citrulline is an organic chemical compound classified as a non-protein amino acid, derived from ornithine. It is a substance which, together with L-arginine and L-ornithine, is involved in the urea cycle, also known as the Krebs cycle. Citrulline is considered an endogenous amino acid which is formed in the human body by natural synthesis. Its name comes from the Latin citrullus, meaning watermelon, because the first food from which this amino acid was isolated was watermelon, the main source of this compound in the human diet.
